A couple years ago I established a bursary through the University of Alberta in my grandparents name.
Why? When I was nearing the end of my computing science degree a million years ago I ran into some financial hiccups (re: I needed to add a semester of courses in the summer to finish my degree given that I had dropped a couple of courses in an earlier semester) and had had to make use of emergency bursaries. Setting up a new bursary seemed a good way to ‘repay’ those bursaries I had received.
Anyways, I don’t know if this is the first year their bursary was awarded, but I did receive the first ‘thank you’ note from the student who received the bursary. Getting the note probably doesn’t seem like that big of a deal but its nice validation that the money is going to a good cause.
